Searching for the Next Traci Lords
The Feds are, that is.
In a sweep of the Southern California porn industry that even the Los Angeles Times called a waste of money, the FBI has raided about a dozen porn studios searching for underaged performers.
The most celebrated case of underage sexpoilation, as I guess some would call it (though the participant herself was certainly willing and desiring to be a porn star), was Traci Lords in the 1980s, who burst on the scene at the tender age of 15. Of course, the fact that women used to get married and bear children at that age and earlier has no bearing on federal statues.
Anyway, what the Feds were seeking is a violation of record keeping. Since May 2005, porn producers have been required to keep two specific types of age-verification documents on file. If you watch the opening of an x-vid, you’ll see a notation about where these files are being kept and who the custodian of record is.
The Puritanical Feds (surely, they must have something better to do; if not, disband the organization) so far have busted exactly one company under the new requirements, and that was the doofus who made the "Girls Gone Wild" series, Joe Francis, who would intoxicate and film young babes on spring break without getting the proper consent and documentation. "Brilliant," as the Guinness ad would proclaim.
Now, as for Traci Lords, she remains an idol of not only porn industry afficionados but of American men in general. Whole sites, including one called "Temple of Traci Lords," have been erected (pun intended) to extol her beauty and charms.
While 15, she appeared in Penthouse and went on to a skyrocketing porn industry career rivaling that of a modern Tera Patrick. She was smart like Tera too, even operating her own (underaged) production company. She made 107 x-vids, only one after she became 18 and legal. If you’ve got a copy of any of the first 106, you have a collector’s item and illegal contraband at the same time. (Interestingly enough, she also appeared in the same issue of Penthouse that featured Vanessa Williams.)
After getting busted, Ms. Lords tried her best to enter mainstream movies and actually appeared on TV shows and low-budget films, but she has since pretty much faded into oblivion.
The Feds are obviously hoping to find the next Traci Lords.
